Student Spotlight — AYSE JESTER

Penn Foster Graphic Design student Ayse Jester plans to start her own business. Ayse found that learning online allows her to schedule study time around Owen, her eight-month old son, her fiancé, and her work.

Ayse Jester describes herself as a geek with a background in computers. Jester said she enrolled in Penn Foster College after trying the more traditional route of taking classes at a local community college. Ayse took two classes and left before completing them. “I just couldn’t sit still for an entire class that wasn’t related to what I want to do.”

Ayse is also trying to start a business. She plans to redesign local business advertisements for a fee. She said she finds many ads look “too busy and unorganized.” The entrepreneurial spirit runs in her family; she also does occasional work for her father, who owns a small computer technology business. Computers have always interested her, Jester said, “They were just kind of all around me.” She also holds down a part-time job as a computer technician at a retail store and enjoys working in the role as a technology-literate female. She said customers often assume she doesn’t know anything about electronics and even bypass her for other clerks only to be referred back to her.

Jester expects to earn her Graphic Design Degree next year, but has to schedule study time around her personal life and her work. Jester said, “It is difficult to balance it all.” However, she admits that the online classes are more convenient, and she can work on her school materials whenever she wants.
